It Happened One Night 1934 Criterion Collection
When spoiled rich heiress Ellen "Ellie" Andrews (Claudette Colbert, Since You Went Away) clashes with her cantankerous father (Walter Connolly, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) over her new husband, King Westley (Jameson Thomas, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town), she jumps ship—literally, swimming to freedom—and boards a bus to New York City. On the way to meet her beloved she runs into ex-reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable, Gone with the Wind), always looking for the story of the century. Warne recognizes who Ellen really is and offers her a choice: give him the exclusive story on her life, or he'll tell Ellen's father where she is. Without her father's money lining her pockets, Ellen finds herself dependent on Peter, which in turn becomes a cross country adventure of trains, car rides, hitchhiking, and shared hotel rooms. As Ellen and Peter spend more time together, they realize that this little jaunt through America may end up in a real fairy tale ending as the twosome fall head-over-heels in love with one another!
