"Jane Eyre" is a dramatic and entertaining version of the Charlotte Bronte classic.
The story takes place in England, during the 19th century. Jane Eyre (Fontaine) is orphaned at a young age. Raised in a dismal charity school, her only friend is Helen (Elizabeth Taylor, in a very early role). She is bullied by obsessive puritan headmaster Brocklehurst (Henry Daniell, whom you might recognize from "The Great Dictator"). Coming of age, after years of suffering and abuse, she becomes the governess at Thornfield Hall, a gloomy estate presided over by the imposing Edward Rochester. Jane falls in love with Rochester, but there is a secret hidden behind the locked walls of the estate...
