Bertrand Bonello's second film is an intensely sombre meditative study of a man going through a Hellish mid-life crisis and his son's progression into adulthood.

Jacques Laurent (Jean-Pierre Leaud), a student revolutionary in 1968, started directing hardcore pornography in the 1970s, convinced of its radical potential. In the mid-Eighties, disillusioned, he retired. Now in debt, Laurent agrees to make another porn film. Not realizing how much the industry has changed through the years, Laurent clashes with a young producer as to how a sex scene should be shot, casting doubts on his ability to pull this off.
Jacques hasn't seen his teenage son, Joseph (Renier), who disowned his father on learning of his profession, for many years. Meanwhile, his son gets back in touch, causing the washed-up Jacques to ponder even more the meaning of his own life...
