Based on a short story by 'Russian Poe' Alexander Grin, this startling slice of Czech Gothic concerns two sisters, Klara and Viktorie, who have recently inherited their obscenely wealthy father's estate. However, the 'nice', pretty, popular sister, Klara, has been left the lion's share of this, much to the barely-concealed vexation of the socially awkward, sexually repressed, and woefully bitter and twisted Viktorie.
A tarot reading convinces Viki that she is the Black Queen, deserving great fortune, while an obstacle, the Queen of Hearts, stands in her way. Not surprisingly, Viki acquires a slow acting, unidentifiable poison and slips it to her sister. Klara’s health slowly declines as Viki’s sense of guilt increases.
