It is the story about a young priest, who is on his way to Africa as a missionary. In Naples, he gets off the train, and is promptly robbed of his suitcase by a group of street urchins. In his search to retrieve the suitcase (which amongst other things holds his passport), the priest comes to understand the extreme poverty and privation of the people of his own country. Rather than continue on his way to Africa, he decides to stay on in Naples, and build a shelter for the local children of the streets. He is very successful with Peppinello, who shows gratitude for what the priest is doing and feels good in his new secure home. But other kids do not play by the rules and find the home a convenient place for hiding the product of their thefts...
