The Swiss photographer Rudy Burckhardt (1914-1999) settled in New York in 1935. Overwhelmed by the size of that city, its architectural diversity and the tense hustle and bustle on the streets, he began to capture his impressions in photographs and on film. A shy and reserved person, he initially devoted his attention to details on facades and to graphic signs of all kinds. Later he observed passers-by hurrying along their way. Finally his interest focussed on the underused areas in Queens or the anonymous roof landscapes in Manhattan.
He made films with Joseph Cornell and Red Grooms, and among his colleagues and the subjects of and collaborators on his films were Alex Katz, Neil Welliver, Yvonne Jaquette, John Ashberry, Ron Padgett, Kenneth Loch, Yoshiko Chuma, Douglas Dunn, Dana Reitz, Paul Taylor, Aaron Copland, Virgil Thompson, Joseph Cotteon, Mimi Gross, Larry Rivers, Jane Freilicher, Frank O'Hara, Brooke Alderson, etc.
This collection of 23 short films by Rudy Burckhardt spans six decades. Shot on 16mm film, the films are representative of the various kinds of films that Burckhardt produced throughout his career, including documentaries, silent comedies, and experimental films.
