British Intelligence needs an agent to penetrate East Germany to confirm the suspicions of the British Security Chief that East Germany is building a rocket in violation of the disarmament pact. Young Polish defector Leiser (Christopher Jones) would much rather chase women but is chosen for the sake of expediency. He goes through intelligence schooling in a secret London establishment under the tutelage of spymaster LeClerc (Ralph Richardson) and his agents John Avery (Anthony Hopkins) and Johnson (Robert Urquhart). Once in East Berlin, Leiser falls in love with a beautiful young girl and the couple decides to flee the espionage experts — both East and West — to start a new life together. But they soon find themselves pawns in a brutal game where the stakes are human lives.
