In 1993, Cameron (Chloe Grace Moretz) is a teenage lesbian who’s trying her best to maintain a lie. Saddled with a boyfriend to keep up appearances, Cameron lives a seemingly “normal” life in small town America, raised by her conservative aunt after her parents have passed away. After a school dance, Cameron is caught having sex with her secret lover, Coley (Quinn Shephard), which shocks her guardian, who hastily sends the teen off to God’s Promise, a gay conversion camp run by therapist Dr. Lydia (Jennifer Ehle). Trying to find her place in the disturbing order of things, Cameron is subjected to hours of therapy a day, forced to confront her “sins” with others, making friends with fellow outcasts Adam (Forrest Goodluck) and Jane (Sasha Lane). As Dr. Lydia probes deeper into Cameron, trying to manipulate the young woman with tests of guilt and piety, the camper doesn’t take to the program, watching others slowly lose control as they try to stifle themselves, while her mind constantly returns to Coley and the release she once felt.
