"Retired" criminal defense attorney James B. Curtayne (Spencer Tracy) lost his practice due to alcoholism, and is only now recovering with the help of his loyal daughter Ginny (Diana Lynn). She's putting off her wedding to Jeff Chapman (Richard Anderson) to keep dad on the straight and level. Then comes a plea from the old Irish neighborhood. Young fish market worker Johnny O'Hara (James Arness) has been arrested for the murder of his boss, and his alibi doesn't hold water.
Curtayne's drinking and rustiness result in O'Hara being found guilty, but Curtayne makes further efforts to prove him innocent.
