Apocalypse – La 2eme guerre mondiale / Apocalypse: World War II / Apocalypse: The Second World War (2009) 3 x DVD9
on July 18th, 2016 at 14:57
This captivating documentary series takes an in-depth look at the Second World War through the eyes of those who lived through it: the soldiers, the victims, and the political and military leaders.
The six-part series documents the entire war, from Hitler's exploitation of a splintered Germany leading to the rise of the Nazi party in the early 1930s, through to the only aggressive deployments of nuclear weapons in all of human history at Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945.
Instead of giving us demonstrations of coloured arrows moving around on maps, this show reminds us that it was the lives of real people, of families, that were either irreparably damaged or stolen altogether, and is infinitely more powerful as a result.
Declassified, colourised, and restored footage reveal World War II as it has never been seen before.

Extras (in French, no subs):
-- Original ECPAD Documentaries (60 mins). Spread over the first two discs of this set are an interesting assemblage of original wartime documentaries made by the French Army Film Unit, which are heavily excerpted for the series itself. These cover major battles and give a really interesting insight into the French take on the war.
-- Making of Featurette (50 mins). This featurette does give some interesting background into the two and a half year production process, and it includes a wealth of behind the scenes footage.
