Based on Tolstoy's novel Peter I and follows the film The Youth of Peter the Great.
End of the 17th century. Having no access to sea, Russia is experiencing losses in foreign trade. Emperor Peter the Great attempts to take over the fortress of Azov, but he fails. The victory is possible only if Russia has its own fleet. The Russian Emperor travels to Europe and learns how to build ships in the Dutch dockyard with his own hands. His apprenticeship is interrupted by news about a military coup lead by his sister Sophia. He returns to Russia to put it harshly down.
