Film tells the story of Protestant minister Jean (Berling), whose marriage to Nathalie (Huppert) is already falling apart when he meets the niece of a parishioner, Pauline (Beart), at a ball in his small village in western France. After another abortive attempt at saving his marriage, Jean divorces his wife, leaving her his entire fortune, quits the clergy, and marries Pauline.
With his new wife, Jean leaves France for Switzerland, where the two lead a simple, idyllic existence. Before long, their picturesque sojourn comes to an end.
Strikes, family rivalries, and the First World War conspire to stop his life running smoothly. We follow Jean for three decades and it's all misery, despair, and unhappiness.
