Moscow on the Hudson 1984
Robin Williams will make you laugh and cry as a freedom-loving Soviet defector in this brilliant, thought-provoking romantic comedy.
Williams stars as Vladimir Ivanov, a musician in the Russian circus who defects to the United States during a trip to New York City.

The film opens with Ivanov giving directions to a newly arrived immigrant, then pondering his own journey to his current situation. In flashback, we join him in Russia, where people are forced to wait in lines for the food and supplies that they need. While the situation is somewhat grim, at least the families have each other.

But, once Vladimir gets to New York City, he feels that he must escape and eventually, does so, freeing himself from the KGB officers keeping track of him when he defects in a Bloomingdales. Exploring what America has to offer, he nearly becomes overwhelmed, but soon enough, he finds friends, many of whom came from some place different themselves.

Ivanov soon realizes that America is not the rosy, idealistic land of fairytales and that, like Moscow, there is plenty of poverty, violence and prejudice to be found. He also realizes that the diversity around him is something special. Ivanov takes in the world around him, and slowly becomes a part of that world.
