1899. George Wells (Rod Taylor) invents a time machine and demonstrates it to his friends, hoping to interest them in the idea that an awareness of the future will inspire men to redirect their energies away from war profiteering.
But the friends are more interested in science for profit than science to benefit humanity and the pacifist George leaves his friends to their profiteering over the Boer war to take off in the future in his time machine. George will observe the tragedy of two World Wars and witnesses the apocalypse in 1966. Going forward more than 800,000 years, George observes the lush renewal of Earth. He also meets the mild-mannered but dim-witted Eloi.
George is horrified to learn that they are essentially being used as livestock for the cannibalistic Morlocks. He falls in love with a beautiful Eloi named Weena and decides to help free her people.
