A largely ordinary film about an extraordinary man, To Hell And Back is the movie autobiography of Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of all time.
Starting in Audie's boyhood home in Texas, the movie rapidly takes us through his youth, where he had to drop out of school to provide for his fatherless family. Within a couple of years, his mother also passes away. Finally, in desperation, he turns to the armed services, as a way to better provide for his family of several younger children. Over the next 400 days he saw action in various European combat zones as well as North Africa, during which his exceptional personal valour and leadership was recognised through regular promotion and decoration.
