Hungary in the middle of the 18th century. Young Sandor Barinkay (Wohlbruck) secretly returns from exile to get back the estate of his family, now in the possession of the swine farmer Zsupan (Kampers). Barinkay gets interested in Zsupan's daughter Arsena (Falckenberg), who however only plays with him. Instead, Barinkay is loved by the gypsy girl Saffi (Knoteck) without being aware of it. Meanwhile, the minstrel Erno (Platte) claims to know where the treasure is hidden that would allow Barinkay to reclaim his estate and marry Arsena...
This is the second film version (after Friedrich Zelnik's 1927 silent version) of Johann Strauss' famous operetta, even though there isn't as much singing as you'd expect from an adaptation of this piece.
This is certainly a major entry in the history of the early German sound film operetta.
