Naive teacher Jenny Bunn (Hayley Mills) from the north of England comes south to teach in a London grammar school. Jenny lodges in the suburban home of Labour councillor Dick Thompson (John Bird), a middle-aged married landlord who takes a shine to the virginal northern girl. Jenny also has to deal with the attentions of bohemian art teacher Patrick Standish (Oliver Reed), who is dating her friend and imagine she’s irresistible to women. Jenny attempts to preserve her old-fashioned romantic ideals against this onslaught of far less romantic men.
